This varies depending on the project anything from expenses to a few hundred pound to thousands, depending on the brand and campaign that your working with. You can receive, what is called a buyout this is to buy the rights to use your likeness or image for a set period of time, which again can be very handsomely paid - usually thousands of pounds.

What happens if I am scouted or approached to model by a model scout?

Many famous models were initially scouted because of their looks or presence and this is usually a good sign, as the scout usually knows the market sector and your saleability.

Why do I need a portfolio and why don’t agencies pay for this?

Not any more as they once did. This is a fallacy in the industry as they expect you to set up your own portfolio for them to promote for work and they then will take a percentage to place you in work between 10 and 20 %. It is an investment to purchase your own photos and rights to use them as your own photography, so you may promote yourself and this allows the appropriate promotional companies or agencies to use these images to place you in work by submitting these photos of you to the appropriate casting.

You need a portfolio to show of your beauty assets, figure and looks and of course your unique selling points to gain work such eyes,hair or figure. The portfolio shows what you are capable of for modelling work, in the various genres you are suited too. Can’t I get free time for print photos to build my portfolio?

It's often not advisable as many photographers use these images for their own gain, by selling them on as stock images. Unless you have the rights to use them it is not usually a good commercial use of your time to get free photography, as it is illegal to put these images up for your commercial gain as they belong to the photographer under copyright law in the UK.

There are a lot of scams how do I look out for them?

Be alert and research the companies before agreeing or go along to anything especially if its promoted loosely online. Many photographers want women and sometimes men to have photographs taken, so that they can take provocative or nude photos for their own use or pleasure and sometimes sell them on to adult sites or fetish sites.
Many companies offer photos in exchange for work so be careful as they may still own the rights and as above, you may not be able to use them.
Modelling is rife with scams of poor pay or bogus cheque payments, so be wary ask about payment and even contracts so you know what you are getting into. -

Yes, check the criteria and terms as all exposure in these sorts of events can benefit you and becoming a winner of a pageant or competition can help your chances of work. Also be aware that many pageants ask for sponsorship money or fees - as do competitions they can ask for a small administration charge.

Practice and research models poise from magazines and their commercial adverts and top model shows on TV. Learn makeup application, hair application, colour and fashion styling again we can help guide you to affiliated courses to gain these skills. Also gain practical skills. in modelling practically for camera so you are confident and in the know as to what to do and what to expect.
